Preschooler Preferences: Why Giving Children Choices is so Important

Offer Preschoolers Choices
Allowing children to make simple choices as preschoolers prepares them to make more difficult decisions as they grow. Giving children choices also helps show them that you value their input and thoughts. So what kind of choices can you give preschoolers?
Choices Preschoolers Can Make
• Whom to pray for
• Which activity to do
• Which song to sing
• Where to sit at group time
• Where to glue crafts pieces
• The color of construction paper

You're probably heard of Supernanny or Nanny 911, both ladies are considered experts on helping children learn to behave. Now meet the Church Nanny, Gigi Schweikert, who's all about helping Christian parents, teachers, and ministry leaders and volunteers, guide children to learn self-control. The purpose of disciplining children is to raise their consciousness about their behavior and the consequences of those actions. The greater purpose of Christian discipline is to raise children’s consciousness to turn away from ungodliness and to live self-controlled lives, no matter how great the temptation to pull away from what is right. “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” Titus 2:11-12 Our society is mostly about serving ourselves. For Christians, our responsibility and joy is to serve the Lord. In order to serve God, we must learn obedience.

Gigi, mother of four and author of seven published Christian books on parenting and children’s ministry, is known for her humor and practical messages. She is a nationally recognized chil development expert who directed the United Nations Early Childhood Program and developed and managed the Johnson & Johnson System of Family of Centers. “I don’t think we always realize what an exceptional responsibility we have working with children, one in which every move we make, and everything we say, can potentially affect a child’s spiritual journey?” Gigi’s passion is for every child to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

The passion in which Gigi weaves her great love for preschoolers and the value Children’s Ministry must have in the local church, leap from the pages of Church Nanny SOS.  She eloquently combines expertise knowledge of child development and colorfully paints the world of a preschooler.  Gigi goes on to provide the reader with practical suggestions and thought provoking ideas on how to create a ministry environment tailored for these precious little ones.  Helpful guidelines that can be implemented in any sized ministry complement her writing. A great resource to add to the library of any person ministering to children in the local church – a helpful tool for parents as well!

The Church Nanny’s Essentials: Spiritual Guidance and Practical Resources for Preschool Ministry is a tool I highly recommend for both the experienced and the non-experienced teacher or administrator in a preschool ministry.  Scripturally grounded and built on the foundation that the goal of a preschool ministry should be to help children begin to see their need for Christ, the ideas and advice are practical, informative, and thorough..  The study provides leaders with very useable tools.  Written in an enjoyable style, the material will inform, challenge, and encourage those ministering to preschoolers.

Once again Gigi has given others the tools to discover and evaluate God’s intended message for us as we are called to guide the children in our care.  It’s not about diapering, it’s about developing spiritual giants.  Gigi challenges us to delve deeper into our spiritual maturity and rise up the spiritual giants within ourselves.   Gigi’s years of experience with young children offers us the expertise of fully understanding their needs and wants, however, it’s Gigi’s rich relationship with Jesus that enables her to inspire us to lead families to Christ with such passion.
